Ms Shantal Rosales speaks with the Fashion Police

1) Please tell us who you are and what you do for those not familiar with you?

My name is Shantal Rosales. I am a free lance writer and photographer born in Los Angeles, California, I currently live near Nashville, TN. I have been married 23 years and have a 19 year old son. I am moving to Dominica later this year to open a modeling agency and attend medical school.

2)What word best describe you as a person?

Intrepid

3) When not working what do you enjoy doing for fun?

For most of my life I have been an avid horsewoman but once settled in Dominica I plan to pursue my life long dream of becoming a certified scuba diver.

4) What is one thing you just can't leave the house without?

Mascara!!

5) Do you think your a true representation of a today's woman

I don't know, I have had a life long difficulty with fitting completely into any role or category.

6) What music would bring you to the dance floor to shake that booty?

Reggae, Hip Hop or R&B

7) If their was one Caribbean island you could visit right now where would it be and why?

Dominica of course! It has captured my heart completely!

8) What do you think of Fashion Police News Blog?

I love it and I never fail to be inspired by it's originality and uniqueness. There is never a boring read on this blog!!

9) What are your 4 fashion tips?

<Blushing> I don't feel qualified to give fashion advice but here goes:

1. Flaunt your best attributes confidently and tastefully, never wear something that is the equivalent of a "for sale" sign.

2. Always dress appropriately for every individual occasion or event, it is all to common to see girls wearing night club type attire to a funeral or job interview.

3. Understand, embrace and remain loyal your own personal style, don't blindly follow fashion trends.

4. Everyone should have a full length mirror in their house and give it an honest (but not overly critical) look stepping out the door.

10) We understand you would love to have a modeling agency in Dominica tell us about that and why?

Because I honestly feel that the unique beauty of these people is one of this island's greatest untapped resources. I would like to use my talents in photography and my eye for the photogenic face to better the lives of people and bring recognition and hopefully and economic boost to this magnificent young nation.

11)What makes a man a true gentleman?

A man who truly enjoys the company of women and see them first and foremost as equal human beings. A true gentleman is a man that can participate in an intelligent, thought provoking discussion, taking a sincere interest in the issue at hand and in your views, opinions and related life experiences. A true gentleman's manners are not an act but instead sincerely rooted in his deep rooted love for all women whether he is romantically interested in them or not.

12) If you had to invite the fashion police reporters for dinner what would you cook them?

Hmmmm....perhaps one of my favorite meals, sauteed sea scallops, rice pilaf and steamed asparagus with a crisp Sauvingon Blanc! For dessert, my grandmother's Irish trifle and cappuccino with a shot of Bailey's Irish Creme!

13)What do you think of women in the past and women now?

I think modern women have a lot to learn from certain women in the past. They need to learn to love and appreciate men for the amazing being they are. Of course there are bad men out there, but there are many good ones too. Women today are too cynical and outright aggressive in their dealings with men. Being a bitchy man hater is counterproductive to success. My grandmother, who raised me, was an inspector in the highest, most top secret level of national defense. She was the lone woman in an all male world and they had they highest respect for her because she had respect for herself and also for them. Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt were two other prominent women from the past that were widely respected by men for the same reasons.

14) If you had the chance to do a shoot with anyone of your choice who would it be and why?

Iman!! I never tire of looking at photos of her! It is far more than just her stunning beauty, it is her regal presence and the powerful intelligence in her eyes. There will never be another like her.

15)What do you think of size zero models?

I think it is a disturbing, demeaning trend that has run it's course and needs to be replaced with an image that portrays a strong, fit, healthy, intelligent, empowered woman fully in control of her own destiny!

16 )Is there any agencies in Dominica if not how do you plan to show that Dominica has great models?

I am not aware of any modeling agencies on the island currently. I plan to show the world that Dominica has great models by achieving success!! Simple as that!!

17)Describe in your own words what true beauty is?

True beauty is self love and self knowledge without vanity. It is about knowing who you are and where you come from and fully embracing every aspect of that!

18) What are some things some ladies do that makes you mad?

There are two main things that come to mind and they are intertwined with each other. Insecurity and jealousy. I am been happily married 23 years and one of the main reasons for our happiness is that we are both secure about ourselves and about our relationship. We TRUST each other. We both have friends of the opposite sex and that is very healthy. I do not like the fact that many women cannot appreciate another woman's beauty without feeling jealous and/or threatened. This jealousy is ALWAYS rooted in their own insecurity.

19) If there was one thing you could change about the fashion world what would it be?

As I mentioned earlier, I'd like to see a more powerful and positive image of women and also of men. Personally, I am pretty tired of advertising images featuring too thin models that look sickly, spaced out and even miserable. I want the models from my agency to turn heads by glowing with an aura of health and physical strength and staring into the camera with pride, intelligence and (gasp) JOY!!

20) Any last words to our blog readers?

The world's greatest Irish dancer, Michael Flatley once said something in an interview that I will never forget. He said: "If you can see your life's dream in your mind with pure clarity and in full color and you possess the courage to pursue that dream, it will become a reality".

21) Do you believe in the saying blondes have more fun?

Of course not!! I am after all a READHEAD!! Ha, ha....

Former Ms England Rachel Christie Speaks to the Fashion Police

1)Please tell us who you are and what you do for those who are not familiar with you?

My name is Rachel Christie and I was crowned the 'First Black Miss England'.

2)What best 3 words describe you as a person?

three words thats best describe me is One ina Million!

3)What made you compete in the Miss England pageant?

I decided to compete in the Miss England competition because i was scouted for modelling quite a lot from a young age, and thought id just give it a go! I also had issues with my confidence, I wasn't confident growing up, so i just plucked up the courage to throw myself in front of hundreds of people half naked (in a bikini) and thought "what have i got to lose". it was a great experience over all and winning helped me with my confidence too.

4)Did you ever think one day you would be wearing the Miss England crown?

When i entered Miss England, there were so many girls who had been preened and pruned for the competition, and being an athlete i  was a girl who hardly ever wore makeup and was so in to sports, i had also been in a pretty bad car crash the day before and had a slight black eye and whiplash, so i didn't ever imagine i would ever be the winner of Miss England. When i won i was in complete shock!

5)What did you learn from being in the contest?

I wouldn't say i have learned anything from being in the competition, but it made me so proud of who I am, and I had a lot of encouragement and brilliant support from everyone especially the black community and that made me so happy. i've always believed in 'being yourself' because your true colours show sooner or later when you put on an act, and most of the girls were 'acting' and i suppose the judges could see straight through it.

6)What one thing cant you leave home without?

I cant ever leave home without....lip gloss! or just something to go on my lips, theres nothing worse than having dry lips, yuk!

7)What would make the former Miss England running to the dance floor to shake her booty?

wow! theres so many songs im loving at the moment, and i love all types of genres of music, but the one that just makes me dance even if im in a mood has got to be Rihanna 'We Found Love' i love it!

8)What are your 3 fashion tips you live by?

My three fashion tips are.....
1.If im showing my legs on a night out, I don't reveal too much on top
2.I always try to have a bit of individuality in my outfits
3.I love wearing heels and stilettos when i'm out they accentuate the legs and i like to embrace my height.

9)What advice would you have for aspiring ladies who would also love to compete in pageants?

The advice I would give to ladies who aspire to compete in beauty pageants is to just go for it! i would also say even though it 'is' a competition to just have fun, if you get too serious and you think you've won it already it will spoil the experience (if its your first time) and if you don't win you'll not be happy! and as destiny child once said "if at first you don't succeed, pick yourself up and try again" go in to these competitions with individuality.

10) If you was given 2 tickets to attend any 2 other pageants which 2 would you go to and why?

If I was given 2 tickets to attend two other beauty pageants it would be...Miss Jamaica and Miss G.B

11)What do you enjoy doing when your free?
I have a pretty busy schedule at the moment with training and looking after my baby! So in my free time i like to have 'me' time and that consists of beauty treatments, like having my nails or hair done or even just sitting down watching TV!

12)Are you single/married/relationship?

Yes I'm in a relationship and have been for nearly 3 years now.

13)Describe in your own words what true beauty is?

I think True beauty is an inner reflection of happiness.

14)What makes a man a real gentleman in your eyes?
A real gentleman is someone who respects women and never stops trying to show a girl how much she means to him, even after he's got her.

15)If you was put into the kitchen to prepare a meal for the fashion police news reporters what meal what you prepare and why?

I would make you Jerk Chicken and rice! I make my Jerk marinade from scratch, I love West Indian food and I enjoy cooking it.

16)If you was given the power to change the fashion world what would you change and why?

I wouldn't change anything about the fashion industry, but I would definitely put more black and asian girls on the runway and have a curvy range of models too, skinny girls aren't the only girls who wear clothes!

17)What are your thought on size zero models and women with curves on the catwalks/bill boards?
I think that size zero models are uncomfortable to look at. Its ok to be slim and healthy, but to be size zero is unhealthy, its women who are pressurised in to being skinny and it has gone over board. when young girls watch fashion shows and see underweight women, they think that that must be beautiful if there on a catwalk, but its seriously unhealthy and dangerous. I think the fashion industry need to promote more women who are more curvy!

18)If you was granted to do a photo shoot with 4 people of your choice from the uk who would you choose and why?

I would love to do a photo shoot with Naomi Campbell, because she is my idol in the fashion industry. I would also want to do a shoot with Jessica Ennis who's a heptathlete for Great Britain,Romeo from so-solid crew because even after like 9years! I still fancy him, and Catwalk Professor because he's just amazing!

Aspiring Model Ms Shenise is Caught and question by Fashion Police

1) Please tell us who you are and what you do for those not familiar with you?

My name is Shenise Bennett and I’m aspiring Model whose dreams and aspirations are streamed towards High Street fashion and Editorial Modeling.

2)What 2 words best describe you as a person?

Hmmm, I think that I would have to go with VIBRANT and CARING because no matter what I do in life, I always like to help those who strive for greatness and in doing so I have a bubby and outgoing personality.

3)What are 3 things you think makes a good model?

There are many qualities which I feel make a good model, but seen as you’ve only asked me for 3, then I would have to go with:
DEDICATION – Modeling isn’t for everyone and therefore if you feel you have what it take you MUST be committed to it 100% as a lot of time, effort and energy is put into all aspects of this career.
CREATIVITY- You must be a person that is willing to ‘think outside the box’ and be versatile with your looks, personality and mentality.  You have to be able to bring something else other than a pretty face to the industry, because looking the ‘same’ as everyone else isn’t going to get you noticed.
PATIENCE- Now this is a skill that not many people are able to adapt to, but modeling can be a very demanding and strenuous job, therefore if you don’t have it in you to be understanding and accommodating all round then you may find it to be quite tedious at times.

4)Name one thing you just can’t leave your home without?

*Giggles* that’s an easy one my hair brush.  I don’t know what it is but I have this thing about my hair and the need for it to look good (most of the time).  For me, if my hair doesn’t look good then the rest of me feels out of place.  Some people may call it vanity but I call it taking pride in your appearance.

5) What are your best assets and why?

Wow, now this is a hard one.  From what I’ve been told my ‘Eyes’ stand out to a lot of people as they are quite big *giggles* I don’t know if I would say it’s a good thing, but I must admit that whenever I have photo shoots make-up artists and photographers like to do close up shots and pay close attention to this part of my body.  Another good asset for me would be my build *shy face* the only reason why I say this is because, in this industry the majority of models have strict eating diets and régimes, whereas I have a really fast metabolism which allows me to pretty much eat all the foods I like without having to worry about gaining lots of weight.   I do exercise regularly though, because I feel it’s important to maintain a healthy living regardless of my chosen career.

6)Are you in a relationship/single/married/divorced?

Are you sure you’re allowed to ask this question *giggles*?  I’m married to my career and happily single as far as the rest of my life is concerned.

7) What are a few things that attract you to a person?

Well if you mean in general then I would have to say a person that is outgoing, fun, bubbly, down to earth, caring and honest.  But if you mean in terms of a partner then I would have to say I like men who are all of the above plus loyal, hard-working, good sense of humor, ambitious, affectionate and family orientated.

8)What would you like most a man in boxers.........bikini briefs.........or a thong?

*Giggles* you really are the fashion POLICE aren’t you.  This question is so personal, but I’m an honest person so give me a man in BOXERS anytime!

9)What do you think of Fashion Police News Blog?

I think it’s one of the most informative and reliable resources for all models, make-up artists, photographers and scouts around.

10)What make up are you wearing now?

How do you know I’m wearing any *giggles*. I’m wearing MAC foundation, Rimmel Longer Lashes Mascara, Sleek Eye liner and Carmex lip therapy.

11)What music brings you to the dance floor to shake your booty?

I thought you’d never ask *smiles* I don’t have one particular type of music that gets me moving but I’m a true West Indian girl through and through so Soca/Calypso and Reggae always gets me moving.  But I’m a 80s baby so all types of music from the 80’s & 90’s is guaranteed to get my booty shaking!

12)If you had to stay home on valentines with your lover what would you cook and what would you wear?

*Massive burst of laughter* Are you guys planning on finding me my ‘perfect’ man *smiles*. Hmmm, again seen as I’m of West Indian descent I would have to go with Curry Chicken (Trinidadian style) with white Basmati Rice and a nice glass of Strawberry syrup with Champagne.   Dessert would be ME *blushing much* and so far as clothes go, what is it they say sometimes ‘Less is More’!

13)What do you love most and hate when dancing with a man?

Hmmm love most is a man that can take control and knows what he’s doing on the dance floor.  Hate most, the exact opposite, a man who asks for a dance but has no rhythm whatsoever *giggles* it’s so off putting and makes me feel like I have two left feet!

14)If you had 3 tickets to attend any event in the world which 3 events would you attend?

This is a tricky one. Ok so the 1st ticket I would want to be backstage passes to see Beyoncé and Jay Z, Beyoncé for her musical talents and positive influences she gives to her fans.  Jay Z, again for his music but mainly for his passion in the fashion industry. The 2nd ticket would be to attend a fashion show which would give me access to designers and models such as Russell Simmons, Kimora Lee Simmons, Tyra Banks, Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Vera Wang and Gucci. And last but by no means least my 3rd ticket would be to attend a celebrity seminar with all the top designers, fashion magazines, editors and models so that I could gain a better understanding and knowledge on what’s makes you successful and respected in such a high profile and demanding industry.

15)What do you think of men who teach women to walk the runway?

I’m not sexist and therefore whether you’re male or female I commend anyone who is willing to share their time and educate models on how to improve their walk on the runway.  I actually think that some men walk better than women and so for someone like myself who is trying to progress, I greatly appreciate and respect their time.

16)What's the worse chat up line a guy ever said to you?

I don’t even know where to begin, I’ve heard that many cheesy lines before that I tend to forget the ones which I know isn’t going to win me over.  But one in particular that I remember a guy saying to me is ‘If I could rewrite the alphabet I’d put U and I together’ *giggles* absolutely hilarious.  Really men, this isn’t something that a woman like me would ever take seriously *covers eyes*.

17)There are so many models out there what makes you different?

This for me would have to be the most important question of all.  I think that I would have to say that I’m a model who is not only wanting to be successful but for me it’s about giving back to others who aspire for the same things as me, but for whatever reasons have had setbacks.  Not only am I passionate and committed to my career, but my goals go beyond fame and fortune, I want to be able to show everyone that modeling is just as important as being a doctor/teacher/lawyer because at the end of the day it’s a career that once achieved can help to inspire and motive others.  I’m a person that sees beauty in everyone no matter your colour or creed and therefore I want to be able to bring a mixture of male, female, black, white, Asian, tall and short aspiring models into the industry.

18)If you had the chance to do a photo shoot with any 2 persons who would you choose and why?

Oh wow, another good question. But again, this is something I’ve dreamed about for a very long time. My two chosen people would be Tyra Banks because of her flawless beauty inside and out, not to mention her experience, knowledge and wisdom throughout the fashion industry.  And my second person would be *drum roll* Amber Rose, the reason why I would chose Amber is because I’ve learnt from her that looking different can be very rewarding.  She changed up her look entirely by going from long hair to short and then blonde,  and in my opinion it’s one of the best decisions she could have ever done as it’s given her, her own identity which is greatly respected by many.  For me she is a perfect example of why being unique is fashionably cool.

19)Who are your 5 closes friends you love so much?

Awww I thought you’d never ask *giggles*. My BEST friend Tejay Montague who is a female Vocal Artist from Barbados, she has been given the title BEST for a reason and that’s because any advice, criticism and lessons learnt have always taught me well and 9/10 been correct. Then I would have to say my friend Taree, she’s a friend that I would do anything for and love more than you know. My cousin and friend Nadine and Gemma, who has always been supportive and there for me throughout thick and thin. Louise who is another friend I met in Barbados only last year but has been like an absolute rock to me, love her bad! And finally but certainly no love lost here my friend Kalisha who I’ve known for the past 5 years (I think) and I don’t see regularly but when we do it’s always like we’ve never been apart. I know that’s six but I have that many people who I consider to be close friends that I can’t just choose my top 5!

20)What is one thing people say about you that is so not true that you would love to address?

Hmmm, well I would hope not a lot but I suppose if I’m honest I’ve been accused of having more time/caring for my friends more than family which is NOT true.  I’m a very friendly person that comes from a large family.  I’m the eldest Grandchild, Niece, Daughter and to my immediate family Cousin which basically means I’ve not had anyone my age group in my family that I’ve been able to have girly talks with etc.  I find it easier to speak with friends because most things I talk about requires me to set an example to the youngsters in my family.  Added to that, there are lots of strong women in my family, my mother being one, and I’m a person that is quite in touch with my feelings and emotions and so I often turn to friends who know how to guide me through certain situations.  I love my family more than words care to express, if it wasn’t for my family I wouldn’t be the person I am today and so I would just like to make it known that Family for me will ALWAYS be a priority in everything I do, but at the same time my close friends will ALWAYS be a part of me.

21)If you had to attend a red carpet event which designer would you wear and why?

Hmmm, difficult decision but I would have to go for an Evening Gown designed by Jovani.  I think it’s more than apparent that the gowns designed are classy, elegant and ALWAYS eye catching. Right up my street!

I love that no matter whats happening in your life no matter whats gone on that day, for that shoot you are not you. your in another world. your taken away from it all and for a little while your A strong confident woman, or a soft pale beauty, whatever the concept of the shoot is. modelling is my escape from reality

Dont sell yourself, stay true to yourself and if you not comfortable with a shoot or it doesnt feel right say something or get out !

well im not a zero/english 4 im a 2/english 6 and alot of my friends are size 0. i eat a healthy diet and exercise every day. zumba and running. I think its true alot of girls are just naturally that thin and shouldnt be penalized for it. i think you should just live healthily and if your natural body is size zero then your beautiful. if its a size 16 well then your beautiful too. if its natural its gorgeous.

10)If you had the power to change the world of fashion what would you change and why?

I would make all the blonde models brunette with hair you cannot dye. then id be the only blonde and be able to do all the shoots that required blondes. haha cruel but it would be nice, theres alot of competition between us blondes !

Dress for your body ! im a size 6 and pear shaped
A waist belt will do wonders

14)What are your thoughts on designers who use less models of colour?
